Miniature Quilt Cabinets - Warm Your Heart

I have been making these little quilt cabinets as gifts and boutique items for some upcoming quilt shows. The unfinished wood cabinets are about 5 inches tall, and can be purchased at Michael's for only $1 each. I paint them with acrylic craft paint called "Craft Smart" also from Michael's. The quilts are just little rectangles of fabric with batting inside - sewn up and folded to look like a stack of quilts. I think old fashioned fabrics with tiny prints look best. In the middle photo, I added some yarn to the quilt collection.

Karen, Those are beyond adorable!! I really think that all you have to do is look at fabric and it turns into something magical! All joking aside, thanks to the Lord for all the talent He has given you and for all the inspiration you give to us every day--Merry Christmas!!

Oh my HECK!! I needed an idea for a couple of quilting friends...AND I was planning to go to Michael's today!! I sure hope they still have these cabinets. What a GREAT idea! Thank you so much for sharing...it came at the perfect time for me! I've been saving selvages for a few months now, and look forward to some fun projects in the new year. Merry Christmas!

I do believe that I will make one of these for myself to have on my desk at the law office ~ need the color and having real fabric close at hand is always a good thing.

Thanks, Karen!

I have 38 of these cabinets in the works tonight! Most are yellow, but some are also painted pink in some areas, especially the knobs. Tomorrow I'll make about 100 quilts. It's fun to say that! Remember, when you make any of this stuff, send photos to karengriska@optonline.net.
I think my selvagequilts email address is not working; I'm looking into it. Thanks for the notes! Karen

I found the cabinets at Michael's today....and I'm getting ready to paint! They didn't have many left, and most of them were missing a knob or two.(I need to figure out what I can use to replace a missing knob on one of them.) The cashier said that these cabinets are usually kept in stock...so they will be getting more in. These will make cute gifts anytime of the year! Thanks again for the idea!

Cindi,
You're right about having to pick through the inventory to find cabinets that are in good shape! The good ones are pretty strong, but you have to sort through a bunch of crummy/broken ones. I'm looking forward to seeing yours...send photos!
